King of the Micro Trade Analysis
Rob,
Attached is an extract of a spreadsheet I use to track my performance against the KOM results. Each month I place the trades for each winner on a sheet along with my results. The attachment is a zip file so you (or anyone who wants to use it) can save it to your computer. Below is a quick guide to all the tabs in the spreadsheet:
1. Equity Curve
Graph showing comparison of equity for winners and myself.
2. Equity Curve Data
The data used to create the curve. The starting balance for each person should be entered in yellow boxes at top.
3. Monthly Chart
A P/L chart for each day for each person.
4. Monthly Summary
The data used to create the monthly chart. Also contains some calculations such as win/loss percentage, profit factor, daily average, etc.
5. First Place
This is where I enter all the trades for the first place winner using the spreadsheet data you provide. I added a couple of columns to calculate the time held for each trade and the pips P/L. The bottom contains a summary of trades broken down by currency pair. Information summarized for each pair includes total volume, Net P/L, Net Pips, etc.
6. Second Place
This contains all the information for the second place winner. All the same information is calculated as for the first place person.
7. Third Place
All information for the third place winner.
8. Personal
All information my personal trades. I didn't do any trading in October so the sheet is empty. Others can import their trades from spreadsheets created by the Trade Station software reports.
9. Time Performance
A summary of P/L for different time periods for each currency pair. There is a summary section and a section for each person. You can see what time profits were made and for which pairs.
10. Currency Performance
A summary of P/L for each currency pair. There is an overall summary section and a section for each person. You can really see what pairs were most profitable for each person.
11. Configuration
Some parameters I use for the spreadsheet. It should be noted that some if the items may not be used. That is because this spreadsheet is a subset of the spreadsheet I use to track all my FX trading. I have simplified things to get an idea of how the winners are doing compared to my performance.
DISCLAIMER: This spreadsheet is for informational purposes only. If you find errors, please let me know.

My Friend,
Your analysis is superb!!
I just (very very nearly) blew up my first micro account and is about to embark on analyzing how the KOTM winners trade. Your spreadsheet couldn't have come at a better time.
BTW, did you manually capture the trade entries of the Oct winners? All the results published here were in PDF format so I guess even processing the raw data could be a lot of work.
I hope FXCM would provide you with the past winners' trade entries in a friendly format so that you can easily publish it in your uber excellent analysis spreadsheet.
Thank you once again -
For the Oct2010 analysis, the "Time Performance" worksheet appears to contain a data mistake.
The time performance table for Third is the same as Second. Upon inspection, the data (or formulas) in the cells for Third place is using the data for Second place. As the worksheet is password-protected, it can't be corrected by readers.
Hope this can be corrected at the author's convenience.

Corrected Spreadsheet
Good catch romulanvox. I have corrected the time performance sheet. Some of the sheets are protected to help prevent accidentally wiping out formulas. However, there is no password. You can unprotect the sheet and change formulas if you wish. I'm donating this spreadsheet to the community with all the source open. If anyone makes changes, I would love to see them. Please post results.
The corrected spreadsheet is attached.
Rich.

Rich. Hi ryancy,
Thanks for being so generous with your data. We look forward to providing the trade data for November's winners within the next week at the following thread: http://forexforums.dailyfx.com/king-...tml#post651610 (November Contest Results - Winner Returns 1,093.29%)
I will let you know when the thread is updated.

Since the forex market has gone through such a roller coaster ride this year, especially for the Euro, I think understanding how the winners traded during the course of this year would be extremely insightful with ryancy's spreadsheet.

It would take some time to pull all the data from the servers for each month in Excel for each KoM Top 3, but it is not something I'd be opposed to. I am going to run it by people here and see if this is feasible.
Thanks for the suggestion! That is how improvements are made.

Rob Rob,
If you can re-post the data then I can re-create the spreadsheets and post them. It would be interesting to compare the results for the year. I'm really interested in seeing how trading has changed since the CFTC rules went into effect.

If my manual calculation is correct, this pair should have generated a total of $6157.39 .
Perhaps you'd like to check what's missing.
Thank you.

Thank you. romulanox,
What you are seeing is something that happens when a trader trades a pair that I do not follow. The calculations won't pick up those because I was only interested in the pairs that I follow. Usually, if I want to examine other pairs then I will change the information in the table on the configuration page.
For curiosity's sake, I added another row in the individual results pages to pick up results for pairs that I don't track. Your manual calculations are correct. However, the time performance and currency performance tabs won't reflect the 'other' results. I haven't noticed a lot of pairs in the winners' results that are not in my list for the past couple of years. Occasionally, I will see some of the AUD or JPY crosses. Perhaps, I'll work in full accountability for pairs I don't track. Maybe it can help me pick better pairs to follow.
Rich.
p.s. updated spreadsheet attached.

Also, there was another minor issue in the first place winner's results. There was a difference in rollover total of roughly a $1. I don't know why but it didn't seem worth investigating for me.

I'm not sure how the trading statements were migrated to ryancy's excel file, but what are the chances that we could get July 2009's into an excel document?
Most appreciative of the work here,
A.Freeman
